I apologize that I’ve been a little MIA for a while – I decided to fast significantly from music for Lent (hit me up if you’re interested in more detail 🙂 ) so this is the first chance I’ve gotten to sit down & really listen for a while. Now it may be that because I’ve been depriving myself so considerably from music that ANYTHING sounds amazing at this point, but I do think that this actually sounds amazing. Click on the photo below to check out what I’m talking about. Great cover of “Cherish the Day” & I think an even more impressive cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” – I feel like he really successfully made an originally grunge rock song sound convincingly like an R&B/jazz track. I really appreciated Casey Benjamin’s take on the song with the vocoder, and over Robert Glasper’s jazz piano & soft drums…so smooth & lovely :). Nice to hear such a smooth version of an already electrically powerful rock classic in my opinion. And…is that Mos Def (excuse me, Yasiin Bey) singing on “Black Radio??” If so, I was pleasantly surprised! Am I late to his singing game?
I found another nice analysis of this album here for you to check out if interested.
Hope to be back soon but the posts may be coming a bit slower for the next few weeks while I fast for Lent! Until next time! 🙂
