Hello loves! I know it’s been quite a while since my last post, but I’ve been busy traveling across the world from Nigeria to Charlotte, and then across the country from Charlotte to LA to celebrate the arrival of 2012! However in the meantime, I’ve been working hard to collect great musical content to include in a post that’s appropriate to culminate both the year and my 2011 trip to Lagos. Sooo, below please find a playlist of my favorite Naija hits from 2011 (this list also includes my favorites from 2010 as well). Hope you enjoy!!
Below I’ve also included my Naija 2011 Playlist de Kike (part Deuce) – these are songs that I couldn’t yet find on Grooveshark 😦 I hope to continue adding to my favorites of Naija playlist as I continue discovering great new music, so I hope you enjoy as well!
Happy 2012 to everyone!!

At the suggestion of one of my other cousins, I decided to take things in a slightly different direction today & listen to the album of Bez: Nigerian soul/jazz/R&B performer. His album, called Super Sun, was released this year in 2011, and I am really diggin the instrumentals & production. Bez has been described as the John Legend of Nigeria, and I do definitely feel some John Legend influences in his music. It wasn’t until I got to the very end of the album and heard the song below though, that I actually thought I could have been listening to John Legend himself. Easily my favorite song on the entire album, “That Stupid Song” features a cute lighthearted recollection of favorite children’s songs on an upbeat sample of the classic song “I’ll Take You There” by The Staple Singers.
“That Stupid Song” is a collaboration between Bez and Praiz, who I would like to turn my attention to. Those remarkably John Legend-sounding vocals are coming from Praise Adejo (stage name Praiz), another up & coming player in the Nigerian R&B music scene recommended by my aforementioned cousin. Praiz has also been featured on very popular Nigerian rapper M.I (check back for another post on him!)’s latest album, M.I2. Take a listen to that “Epic” song from the album below, and tell me if THAT doesn’t sound like a Nigerian John Legend…
For those who are interested, below is another official video from Praiz on one of his solo singles – a nice R&B love song creatively titled “I Love You” 🙂
Doesn’t sound so much like John Legend to me on this one, but I still think he sounds good! I’ll be very interested to see if either he or Bez become actual legends in Nigerian music history, and I’m eagerly anticipating Praiz’s first official album release!
Before ending this post, I would like to add an update to my last post on Wizkid and share with you another favorite from this year’s party scene & his album – a very highly entertaining video for what seems to be his most recent release, “Pakurumo” (you’ll hear another one of his songs, “EME Boyz” in the beginning of this video – a tribute to the Empire Mates Entertainment Group that Wizkid belongs to)…
Another really easy dance beat to groove to all night. The female lead of both the song & the video is Funke Akindele, a popular Nigerian actress. Annnd…do you recognize the lyrics at 4:05?? Hint: you’ll find them somewhere in this video…:)
Until next time!!
At my cousin’s suggestion, I’ve been meaning to listen to Wizkid for a while now. I finally got the chance to listen to his album Superstar today, and not surprisingly, found that I had already heard one of the songs before from my Christmas trip to Lagos last year…
Listening to the album further, I actually recognized a song that I heard just a few nights ago at my family friends’ Anniversary party here our first night. It was one of my favorite songs of the night, so what a pleasant surprise to discover its name & artist so easily & so soon after I heard it! Such a smooth easy dance beat that I could groove to all night long, below is the video featuring an apparently newly 21-year-old Wizkid on his…interesting…birthday festivities 😉 and you can catch a glimpse of his above song in the beginning (see below for additional side comment regarding this song)**:
On a completely off topic from Wizkid, I was also lucky enough to discover the name & title of another song that I absolutely LOVED from last year! Seriously one of my favorites that I bumped on repeat to this day without knowing the name & artist…check out the video below (wish I could find better video quality, but you can at least hear a better quality version of the song here):
Surprise surprise, the song is from Naeto C, the artist on one of my other elusive favorites from last year as well!! It looks like I’m going to have to listen to him more in depth…VERY SOON. (I have a feeling I’m going to find him RAVE-worthy, & that I’ll be extremely late for this one too…)
**Small aside: maybe you’ll notice that Wizkid calls out a “fine girl no pimple” at the beginning of this song – & Tinie Tempah also claims to be a Simply Unstoppable “fine boy no pimples” (remember?) Well, here’s what I’ve found to be what I believe the origin of that phrase is if you’re interested…LOL (please feel free to correct me if you know more & I’m mistaken!):
Stay tuned for more & hopefully an especially exciting update in the near future! 🙂
